How have SAISD schools shaped you into the person you are today?

Three schools in SAISD have shaped me into the person I am today. I attended Young Men’s Leadership Academy from fifth grade through ninth grade, which has allowed me to gain a great foundation. YMLA instilled character, discipline, leadership, and public speaking in me. These skills have shaped me into who I am today. Sam Houston High School has taught me valuable Culinary skills and has allowed me to obtain a ServSafe Manager Certification. Also, Sam Houston has allowed me to take JROTC, which instilled strong leadership skills in me. Lastly, Evening Flex High School has allowed me to obtain extra credits, putting me on my path to graduating early. These schools have allowed me to exceed my goal of graduating high school early while also giving me many valuable skills that I will take and use in the future.   

What is the greatest challenge you have overcome during your education, and how did you overcome it?

My greatest educational challenge was moving to many different schools. Due to financial hardships, I have attended ten schools throughout my lifetime. Moving from school to school allowed me to see the value of my education. This led me to become a self-advocate for my education. Although moving a lot was hard, once I took control of my education, school became my most powerful tool because I believe education will take you places. 

Who has been most influential to you in your education and why?

The most influential person in my life is my Mother. Growing up, we went through many challenges, yet she is always there for me and going above and beyond to make sure I have what I need plus more. She is truly inspiring. Also, many staff members at Sam Houston are influential because many who work here were raised on the East Side and graduated from Sam Houston or come from a similar background, and they are a prime example of what can come out of the East Side and it shows me that the world is truly your oyster. 

As a leader of the Class of 2022, what is your hope for the Class of 2022 as they move on to the next chapter of their lives?

My hope for the Sam Houston Class of 2022 is to go out into the world and make your voices heard to create change, but most importantly, always chase your dreams even if they seem out of reach and NEVER GIVE UP!!
